Nonpartisan, nonprofit advocate

Allies for Children launched as a nonpartisan nonprofit to advocate for policy and practice changes that improve the health, education and well-being of children and youth in Allegheny County.

Allies for Children brings together a diverse group of people, including elected officials, to work toward common goals and speak out about young people. Currently, Allies for Children is focused on promoting health and improving education across Allegheny County.

To connect all children and youth to quality, affordable health insurance programs and foster a culture of coverage, Allies for Children partnered with the Office of the Mayor of Pittsburgh, the Allegheny County Health Department and the Consumer Health Coalition. The group developed a plan called Healthy Together and later received a $200,000 implementation grant from the National League of Cities (NLC).

Education

In the education arena, Allies for Children joined the emerging statewide efforts to reform the Basic Education Funding formula (BEF).

The coalition’s mission is to ensure that Pennsylvania adopts a new and equitable system of funding for public education. Ideally, the system would provide every school the resources necessary to enable every student to meet academic standards and be prepared for post-secondary success.

Additionally, Allies for Children is working to ensure all children and youth in Allegheny County have access to high quality out-of-school time programs that are innovative and affordable.
