Founded in 1986, Just Harvest is an anti-hunger organization that through advocacy and lobbying, community action, and individual assistance works to reduce poverty and economic inequality, improve access to healthy food, and boost access to public safety net benefits in Allegheny County.

In addition to our public policy advocacy, Just Harvest connects people to the social safety net programs that boost their income and help keep food on the table. We offer a quick screening by phone to determine callers’ eligibility for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, and can help with the application and any problems with receiving benefits. We provide info to help navigate the public benefits system, including SNAP/Food Stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF/cash assistance), Medical Assistance, LIHEAP, and WIC.

Just Harvest is a leading member of the United Way Free Tax Prep Coalition and runs four tax prep sites in Allegheny County, operating mid-January through mid-April. We help low-income households file their income tax return and maximize their refund by accessing key federal tax credits.

Just Harvest’s Fresh Access program enables EBT, credit, and debit card users to buy fresh food at participating farmers markets and farm stands, primarily from May to November. We also provide Food Bucks to maximize SNAP shoppers’ purchasing power.

Fresh Corners is a relatively new initiative by Just Harvest aimed at increasing access to fresh produce in “food desert” communities at existing corner stores. Fresh Corners seeks to improve communities from within, partnering with local store owners to provide affordable access to fresh, nutritious foods.
